Beachroad Magazine hit the road with Tom Jones in his ultra cool 1957 Volkswagen Single Cab, To say this ride is a head-turner is an understatement. A taste of California on the streets of Dubai.

NAME? // Tom Jones.

YOUR FIRST JOB? // Electrical Apprentice.

YOUR CURRENT OCCUPATION // Director of Broadcast Operations.

WHY VINTAGE VW? // I got bitten by the air-cooled VW bug when I was 17 and since then I eat drink and sleep VW’s. I love the look and simplicity of them, no water just air to cool! I would also say you have to learn to “wrench” and knowing how to maintain your own car is part of the vintage VW lifestyle. Most of my friends from my early VW days have built businesses around the restoration and maintenance of air-cooled VWs.

WHAT VEHICLES / BIKES / WHEELS DO YOU OWN PERSONALLY? // 1957 VW Single Cab, 1964 VW Beetle, 1990 911 C2 manual and my daily hack is a VW Golf R32.

ANY MOTION RELATED MISHAPS? // Once had a brake failure in my VW beetle narrowly missing a police car but running aground on a large roundabout in the UK!

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START OWNING VINTAGE VW's AND ANY CHALLENGES ALONG THE WAY? // The classic VW scene is full of great people and its foundation is built on people helping each other realise theirpassion and keep their vehicles on the road. My first car was a 1965 VW beetle which was written off by an
RAC recovery truck, I immediately found another one and have had that car for over 25 years. I love drag racing and the VW drag racing scene which originated in SoCal is big in Europe too, a Hot VW can embarrass a modern day sports car and my 64 beetle has. Both of my vintage VWs have upgraded engines, the beetle is fuel injected and built for drag racing, the single cab is built to keep up with traffic on the motorway.…. The biggest challenge is sourcing parts here in the UAE, there are none available on the shelf so everything needs to be imported from Europe or the America.

DO YOUR FAMILY FOLLOW YOUR PASSION FOR CARS? // They say I have a “car” problem but do love the cars just not working on them!

WHAT 5 CARS WOULD YOUR DREAM GARAGE CONTAIN? // There are only 2 missing, 1952 VW Split Ragtop Beetle and a 73 911 RS.

WHERE WOULD YOUR 4 DREAM GARAGES BE LOCATED? // Malibu, London, Dubai, Brisbane and Geneva.

YOUR 5 FAVOURITE AUTOMOTIVE BRANDS? // VW, Porsche, VW, Porsche and VW.

WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVOURITE AUTOMOTIVE BRAND? // None of the above.

CARS ASIDE WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER PASSIONS? // Music has always played a huge part in my life, so much so that I brought my vinyl and Technics 1210s with me to Dubai… no excuse is needed to roll back to those late 80’s and early 90’s house days!.

YOUR GREATEST LOVE? // My wife and daughter.

YOUR GREATEST FEAR? // Being unable to drive my cars!

WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST MEMORY? // Being a passenger in my dads MG.

WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL AND WHY? // My mum, she has the most positive outlook on life even when times are bad.

WHAT IS THE LAST GIFT YOU GAVE SOMEONE? // A shisha pipe to our closest friends who have just retired back to the UK.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE CHILDREN? // Be positive, kind and follow your passion.

YOUR WORST TRAIT? // Impatience when one of my cars are broken!

THE WORST TRAIT IN OTHERS THAT GETS YOU MAD? // Selfishness.

WHO WOULD PLAY YOU IN A MOVIE? // Ricky Gervais.

FAVOURITE MUSIC // House.

FAVOURITE BOOK? // “How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive” by John Muir..

THE CLOSEST YOU HAVE COME TO DEATH? // Crashing and rolling in a Lancia Beta 3 times back in 1989.

FAVOURITE DESTINATION? // California.

LEAST FAVOURITE DESTINATION? // Rush hour traffic in L.A

WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH? // Looking back at how much time and $$ I have poured into my air-cooled addiction but I wouldn’t change a thing.

WHAT MAKES YOU CRY? // When one of my cars is broken.

YOUR MESSAGE? // Next time you see a vintage VW on the road wave and smile, we are a nice and friendly bunch of people. : )
