Beachroad Magazine meet up with Surf House MD & Founder Scott Chambers for a coffee and chat. The Surf House is far more than your regular surf store, Surf House incorporates a coffee shop, Yoga studio and music room / studio rental. They also have time to arrange Surfari trips to Sri Lanka and the Maldives as well as repairing your surfboards and Sups. Busy boys indeed.
What made you start the Surf House and any challenges along the way?
Opening the Surf House was a natural progression from a vision that started in 2005. The idea was to share our love of the ocean and surfing with the people of Dubai. We believe the ocean has a very positive effect on peoples lives and our goal was to show everyone that you can in fact surf and paddle in the UAE. I’ve also always felt that there is something about human nature that enjoys having everything about a particular subject under one roof in a convenient location.
There were a few challenges along the way. We were a new business that didn’t yet fit into the system that existed at the time. Given there was never any shortage of passion for what we were doing, it wasn’t hard to preserver towards finding a solution.
We have built what I believe to be a very unique community centre that helps facilitates a beautiful lifestyle accessible to all. I am grateful to Dubai for enabling us to turn a passion into a lifestyle.
You have seen Dubai change so much, what do you see as the positives and negatives of such drastic changes, especially to the beaches and oceans.
The growth of any city comes both plus’s and minuses. I think the positives here in Dubai have far outweighed any negatives. We’ve been able to witness the most rapid rate of development we will ever experience in our lifetime.
There are things happening here in Dubai now that we would have never even dreamed of as kids. I find it an exciting to place to live with such a diversity of growing communities. I haven’t always been very happy about the coastal and offshore construction that has happened over the last fifteen years. Although I am confident as H.H Sheikh Mohamed once said, 'Dubai is young, growing and still learning', that Dubai will carry on improving with all its endeavours.
What does the Beachroad mean to you?
I have stories from my Dad about this road in the 70’s - It was Dubai’s first real road. When we were kids we would hitchhike with labour trucks down the length of this road to check different spots when the surf was up. It’s been a backbone to Dubai’s surf culture since the eighties.
