Rollan Portrait by Mark Ganzon @burstparty

NAME? // Rollan Hernandez Rodriguez

YOUR FIRST JOB? // Junior Graphic Designer in B&C Design, a Manila based design studio.

YOUR CURRENT OCCUPATION? // Founder and Creative Director of Ape Creative

WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON THE DESIGN SCENE IN THE UAE? // Thriving and evolving but needs a little sprinkle of authenticity. From an designer expatriate point of view, It is interesting to me that design sensibilities of different people from around the world are all mashed up altogether in one creative soup bowl.

WHO ARE YOUR DESIGN HEROES? // Paula Scher, Steven Heller, David Carson, Aaron Draplin, Neville Brody, Stefan Sagmeister and all the folks of ILOVEDUST and Pentagram.

BEST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB? // Easily, I can jump from one role to the other. Today Creative Director. Tomorrow a Graphic Designer. An Illustrator on one day. It is never boring and it is all pure fun. Doing things I am passionate about.

WHICH PROJECT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE? // Doing a series of illustration for a local consumer water brand. Basically, I have to do seven separate illustrations depicting the cultural richness of the all continents. It was bone breaking and nerve wracking. See project link.

DESCRIBE YOUR APPROACH TO DESIGN? // This is a linear process in which I practice all the time :

  1. Start with good vibes: You must be highly interested about the project and the client has to be highly likable.
  2. Research
  3. Ideation and conceptualization
  4. Organization
  5. Proper implementation and execution of ideas
  6. Flawless delivery
  7. Contemplation (review and assessment)

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START APE CREATIVE AND ANY CHALLENGES ALONG THE WAY? // I've been an agency under dog for a long time, where in I've been thrown with silly briefs and donkey jobs. They called me "The Rollanizer" for just doing pretty things for some other people's ideas. I quit employment and started my own design studio. Eventually, doing the things I am passionate about, design and illustration. After that, it was history.

YOUR FAVOURITE AUTOMOTIVE BRAND? // Land Rover

YOUR FAVOURITE CLOTHING / FASHION BRAND? // Levi's, Lucky Brand and selected brands that I can snatch from Zumiez.

DUBAI ASIDE WHERE WOULD YOUR NEXT STUDIO'S BE BASED? // Next studio would be somewhere back home in Manila.

DESIGN ASIDE WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER PASSIONS? // Art, music and Film.

ARE YOU A COLLECTOR? // I am keen collector of anything vintage super obots. Mainly, Soul of Chogokins. But sometimes I do collect Art/Vinyl toys and art/design related books.

HOW DOES DUBAI INFLUENCE YOUR WORK? // It influenced me in so many ways. The fact that I lived and worked in Dubai for fifteen years, this place molded me. I learned how to become a "world" citizen.

WHAT PROJECTS ARE YOUR FAVOURITE TO WORK ON? // Artistically inclined projects where I can play. Corporate is also cool, but it depends on the brief. If ain't fun, it's a no go.

WHERE DO YOU LIVE IN DUBAI? // Jebel Ali, Dubai

WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO EAT, SHOP, SOCIALIZE IN DUBAI? //

Eat: Karachi Darbar and Xiao Wei Yang
Shop: Dubai Mall

YOUR TAKE ON DUBAI AS A CITY AND ITS RAPID CHANGES? // It's so fast that it sometimes loses it's soul.

WHY SHOULD SOMEONE VISIT DUBAI? // For them to witness how to become a citizen of the world without actually being a real citizen.

YOUR GREATEST LOVE? // My wife, family, friends and my dog.

YOUR GREATEST FEAR? // The world will be completely obliterated because of man-made idiocracy.

WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST MEMORY? // My dad trying to scratch my back.

WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL AND WHY? // My mom, the all-time hardworking and the most selfless person I know.

IF YOU COULD SPEND A DAY WITH ANY DESIGN LEGEND WHO WOULD IT BE? // No doubt, David Carson.
