Beachroad Magazine spend a day at Black Palace Beach in Umm Suqeim painting with artist Kathryn Wilson a Dubai veteran with 21 years and counting.
Kathryn's paintings are created using oil, acrylic & spray painting techniques. A member of Tashkeel and currently showing a solo exhibition called 'Saturate' at FN Designs Gallery in Alserkal Avenue. Previously, Kathryn has been commissioned by organisations such as Brand Dubai,The Cultural Office & Capsule Arts.
Kathryn trained in Fine Art at the University of Oxford exhibiting in group shows at venues such as Modern Art Oxford. Growing up in Dubai she left for a while and then came back 7 years ago. Her passion is working outdoors, particularly at the moment whilst the weather is so good painting on Al Sufouh Beach (also known as Black Palace Beach), and at Tashkeel and at home.We headed to the beach with Kathryn as she worked on a new painting, the back of her car littered with spray cans, brushes, canvases and sketchbooks slung in the back of it. Look closely and you'll spot smudges of turquoise paint inside & out.

NAME? // Kathryn Wilson …but call me Katie.
YOUR FIRST JOB? // Working in a fish & chip shop.
YOUR CURRENT OCCUPATION // Artist.
YOUR GREATEST LOVE? // The sea
YOUR GREATEST FEAR? // The sea
WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST MEMORY? // Playing in the garden at home in Garhoud & the cacti in my friend's garden across the road.
WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL AND WHY? // I have two. The first is my grandmother Peggy Wilson, she was a formidable lady who danced to her own tune. The second is my brave (and fabulous) friend Sally who we lost to cancer last year.
WHAT IS THE LAST GIFT YOU GAVE SOMEONE? // Rosemary, Mint and Thyme plants.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE CHILDREN? // Learn from your mistakes and enjoy the journey.
YOUR WORST TRAIT? // Not saying what I think.
THE WORST TRAIT IN OTHERS THAT GETS YOU MAD? // Self worship.
WHO WOULD PLAY YOU IN A MOVIE? // A young Yasmin Bleeth please.
FAVOURITE MUSIC // The Whitest Boy Alive – 'Burning'.
LAST RECORD YOU BOUGHT? // A Cafe Del Mar album.
FAVOURITE ARTISTS? // People who live and breathe Art here in DXB; Ruben Sanchez, German Fernandez, Liz Ramos Prado, Tarsila Schubert, The Brown monkeys, Fats & Matt Ryder.
LAST BOOK YOU BOUGHT? // 'Lost Walls, Graffiti road trip through Tunisia' by El Seed.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU? // Colour, the ocean, the desert, wadis, mountains, water & light.
THE CLOSEST YOU HAVE COME TO DEATH? // On a dhow last year on the open sea during a shamal. I was so scared I didn't speak for 2 hours till we reached the harbour. One of our friends was heavily pregnant and a small child threw up in his mother's face. It was the same weekend the Torch building caught fire in the Marina. We now refer to that trip as 'the dhow of doom'.
FAVOURITE DESTINATION? // Santorini, closely followed by Oman.
LEAST FAVOURITE DESTINATION? // My previous workplace.
HOW DO YOU RELAX? // I paint and swim lengths, not at the same time.
WHY DUBAI? // The space, the sunshine, the sky, the dunes, the freedom, the opportunities, the vibe.
ARE YOU SPORTY? // Not really, I only run if I am being chased.
BEACH OR DESERT? // The beach with the desert behind it. If you drive to the Wahiba Sands in Oman you can have both.
URBAN OR RURAL? // Rural ….and quiet.
CATS OR DOGS? // CATS, fluffy ones.
COFFEE OR TEA? // Tea. Tetleys, Mint, Camomile and maybe a Mocha.
WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH? // My husband's impression of Billy Connolly.
WHATS MAKES YOU CRY? // Music. Paul Weller – 'You do something to me'. My sister's friend was killed in a car crash a long time ago, his family played this song at the funeral.
