Beachroad Magazine puts on their board shorts and heads to meet Jennifer Mauerhofer Team UAE Pro Flowboarder extraordinaire. Flowboarding is a combination of surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding and skimboarding.
When not in the water the award winning Swedish / Swiss sportswoman who studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute in New York can be found actively involved in the theatre community in Dubai.

Jennifer answers The Beachroad Magazine Q&A //

NAME? // Jennifer Mauerhofer.

YOUR FIRST JOB? // Serving drinks and snacks at art galleries at the age of 15 was one of many odd jobs I did during my early teens, including babysitting.

YOUR CURRENT OCCUPATION // I’m a Professional Multi-Tasker, Life Lover, Flowboarder and Actress.

YOUR GREATEST FEAR? // Mediocrity and sharks (P.S. they are everywhere).

WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST MEMORY? // Playing hair dresser with my playmate at her house. I was 3, she was 4 years old. She was the hair dresser and I the client. It was all fun and games until her brother aged 6, wanted to play along, little did I know he exchanged the toy scissors for the real deal. Needless to say after losing all my goldilocks I was more often than not mistaken for a boy. Someday I will release my book, “My Year As A Boy And How It Shaped My Life”.

WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL AND WHY? // There have been four people in my life who have had great influence on how I approach life; my mom, my grandma, my granddad and my stepdad. They each taught me, in their own way, the importance of optimism, positivity, love and laughter. I grew up in a family in Sweden, where crying tears of laughter was pretty much the order of the day. My granddad was a natural comedian, the funniest man I have ever met. My grandma his devoted loving fan yet with a mind of her own, and most of all my mom/best friend, a beautiful, fun loving, strong, independent woman with an adventurous spirit and generous heart. And last but not least my amazing superdad, the most hardcore amateur athlete I know with an unstoppable passion for art (and food).

IF YOU COULD SPEND A DAY WITH ANY SURF ICON ALIVE OR DEAD WHO WOULD IT BE? // Mick Fanning. He’s pretty good at knocking out great white sharks.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START FLOWBOARDING? // After a failed career in skydiving, I discovered flowboarding in 2011 here in Dubai. I saw the super skilled local talent and challenged myself to become their rival.

HOW HAS YOUR GROWN GLOBALLY IN THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS? // Flowboarding hosted its first international competition in 2009 and has since held a World Flowboarding Championship every year. So far this event has been hosted in Singapore (2009 and 2010), Durban (2011), Mallorca (2012), and Abu Dhabi (2013, 2014 and 2015). Last year, another international contest was introduced to the annual flowboarding agenda: the US Open of Flowboarding which is held in San Diego, California. Adding another big international contest to the annual agenda has definitively raised the stakes and with more FlowBarrels opening up around the world, I’m hoping to see the birth of a FlowBarrel World Tour.

HOW IS THE FLOWBOARDING SCENE IN THE UAE? // The flowboarding scene in the UAE is rather small compared to other flowboarding communities around the world. Because in the UAE, the FlowBarrel is located within a waterpark, YAS Waterworld on YAS Island in Abu Dhabi, it’s only possible to use the barrel for bodyboarding during public hours, and in order to flowboard the options are limited to one or two sessions week, where YAS Waterworld hosts exclusive flowboarding sessions in either the morning before the official opening hours or in the evening after the closing of the park.

WHATS THE BEST MOMENT YOU HAVE HAD IN THE SPORT? // Landing a big trick in a critical moment in a heat during a contest, and winning of course! Last year I won the World Championships in the Women’s Pro Flowboard Strapped division. And this year I won the US Open of Flowboarding and took home 1st place in both the Women’s Pro Flowboard Strapped and Strapless divisions!

IS FLOWBOARING AN EASY SPORT TO GET INVOLVED IN? // Yes! If you have access to a FlowBarrel in your vicinity, all you gotta do is show up, jump on that board and go with the flow! But be prepared, chances are you will get hooked. If you like board sports and a bit of a challenge you should definitively give it a go! Flowboarding is in its own unique way a combination of surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding and skimboarding.

WHERE DO YOU SEE THE SPORT HEADING IN THE UAE? // I see a wavehouse on the beach in either Dubai or Abu Dhabi with a beautiful FlowBarrel, restaurants and bars, a growing flowboarding community of lots of passionate flowboarders, contests, and spectators all having a fabulous time. That’s my dream.

PICK YOUR DREAM FLOWBOARDING TEAM? // I’m proud to say that our Team UAE has held the Team World Flowboarding Champions Trophy for two years in a row now (2014 and 2015). Yet the obvious dream team is Team USA, but the true flowboarding legends are from South Africa, no one can beat them in style.

WHAT OTHER PASSIONS DO YOU HAVE ASIDE FROM FLOWBOARDING? // Acting, art, languages, and action sports!

WHAT OTHER SPORTS ARE YOU A FAN OF? //  Wakeboarding, skateboarding, skydiving, surfing and skiing get my heart racing, I love a good adrenaline rush!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE CHILDREN? // Be a person with your own mind, own attitude, own class, own life. Be your own role model.

YOUR WORST TRAIT? // Sarcasm. Not always appreciated, and often misunderstood.

THE WORST TRAIT IN OTHERS THAT GETS YOU MAD? // Sense of entitlement, racism and greediness.

FAVOURITE MUSIC // I love all kinds of music! Anything that gets my hips shaking.

LAST RECORD OR DOWNLOAD YOU BOUGHT? // I don’t buy or download music. I Spotify.

FAVOURITE BOOK? // I don’t have a favorite book, song, film, music or author, I don’t believe in favorites. But I can give you my least favorite one; the cook book.

LAST BOOK YOU BOUGHT? // “I am Zlatan”. It was at the airport, the flight was delayed and I needed entertainment. Thank you Zlatan Ibrahimovic you thoroughly entertained me.

THE CLOSEST YOU HAVE COME TO DEATH? // That time I embarked on the great “Paddle Around the World” charity event back in 2012. It’s an annual stand up paddle around the world islands event here in Dubai. Clearly I didn’t realize it was going to be a race. It took me six endless hours of nonstop paddling on a board that was too small and during which I was almost run over by a massive freight ship in the dark early morning hours. I was followed by a shark that kept circling under my board (I didn’t see him but I swear he was there). experienced total and utter exhaustion when I realized that after five hours of paddling for my life I still had at least another hour to go to get to shore. I haven’t paddled since.

FAVOURITE DESTINATION? // The unknown. And California.

LEAST FAVOURITE DESTINATION? // I can’t think of one.

HOW DO YOU RELAX? // I close my eyes and boom I’m off to never-never land.

ARE YOU SPORTY? // I would say so, yes.

BEACH OR DESERT? // Desert. (Fewer sharks).

URBAN OR RURAL? // I’m an urban gal.

CATS OR DOGS? // Definitively dogs.

COFFEE OR TEA? // I love coffee.

WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH? // A good dose of clever spontaneous sarcasm and people who don’t take themselves too seriously. Did I mention I make myself laugh all the time?.

YOUR MESSAGE? // This year 2016, I got two words for you: “Stronger Together”. And don’t forget to follow my flow movements on Instagram: @jennifer.mauerhofer.flow. See you there!
