Beachroad meet Dubai based Glaswegian Jacklyn McCulloch founder of fashion brand 'White Palm Boutique'. Noticing a gap in the market in Dubai for something she was passionate about, Jacklyn launched her own brand and White Palm Boutique was born.

NAME? // Jacklyn McCulloch.

YOUR FIRST JOB? // Waitress in Brodie’s Scottish Restaurant.

YOUR CURRENT OCCUPATION // Owner of White Palm Boutique.

WHEN DID YOU REALISE THE FASHION WORLD WAS FOR YOU? // I’ve always loved designing clothes, which started when I was a figure skater and I used to design all my costumes. From drawing the pictures, going to the material shop with my mum and then having it all put together has always been something I was really passionate about. Then, as soon as ASOS existed I was obsessed with online (window) shopping and would spend hours online looking at clothes, even though I couldn’t afford to buy them at that age…now I am able to combine both online shopping, with designing outfits that I would love to wear so its perfect!

It was probably in my teenage years that I realized that having the right outfit can dramatically improve your confidence and make you feel like you’re ready to take on the world. I have always been really shy growing up, so having on a great outfit (or an outfit that I felt great in) always gave me a lot more confidence.

YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNER? // Oliver Rousteing / Balmain.

IF YOU WERE NOT A DESIGNER WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING? // I have always wanted to be an ntrepreneur, and have always come up with random little business venture ideas…so I would probably be doing something else entrepreneurial!

IF YOU WERE ONLY ALLOWED TO DRESS ONE INDIVIDUAL DEAD OR ALIVE WHO WOULD IT BE? // Bella Hadid – she is elegant, classy and can pull off anything.

WHAT PIECE OF WORK HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE? // Actually setting up the business from nothing, having no idea where to start and what to do, how to go about it and no role models or anyone who has set up something similar to give me tips or advise has been a huge challenge. I sat on the idea for a year, getting really frustrated at myself that I wasn’t doing anything about it (because I didn’t know where to start!). Then it took me about two years to have everything fully up and running (because I made so many mistakes and really had no idea what I was doing). Google has been my best friend!

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START WHITE PALM BOUTIQUE AND ANY CHALLENGES ALONG THE WAY? // In the UK I was used to getting free, next day delivery for any clothes that I ordered. Then, when I moved to Dubai ordering clothes was a huge hassle. I wasn’t able to just order an outfit last minute for any weekend plans I had. I had to plan weeks in advance to make sure any outfits arrived on time, plus I would have to pay a lot more for delivery costs and also sometimes get the clothes delivered to the UK and wait until I had a layover in the UK to pick up the clothes.(basically a lot of waiting to receive nice outfits!) I know that so many other expats had exactly the same issues, so I wanted to create something that gave us all access to next day, free delivery in Dubai.

There have been lots of challenges like finding a good supplier, setting up payment gateways that work with AED, working out where to begin and how you even go about setting up a business in Dubai.

WHERE DO YOU SEE WHITE PALM BOUTIQUE BEING IN 5 YEARS TIME? // I would love to eventually open a White Palm Boutique store, or a few stores!

WHERE WOULD YOUR 5 DREAM WHITE PALM BOUTIQUE STORES BE LOCATED? // Dubai, Los Angeles, New York, London and San Fransisco.

FASHION ASIDE, WHAT INSPIRES YOU? // I love a good inspirational book. People also inspire me. I love meeting/reading about/being around inspiring people who have accomplished a lot, who have big goals or that you can learn a lot from. People who don’t think that any idea is stupid or small.

WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO EAT, SHOP AND SOCIALISE IN DUBAI? // White – for a night out, Muchachas for a casual ladies night/dinner. Ramusake for Ladies night, The Scene for a hangover day and Mall of the Emirates for shopping.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN DUBAI? // Four and a half years.

WHY SHOULD SOMEONE VISIT DUBAI? // Ladies nights, brunches, the amazing restaurants, yacht parties, sky diving, beaches / pools….. the list is really big.

YOUR GREATEST LOVE? // Carrot cake, Christmas, wine and sunsets (sorry I couldn’t choose one).

YOUR GREATEST FEAR? // Not making my mum proud.

WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL AND WHY? // Oprah Winfrey – This is an obvious one. She is so inspiring in every way. She is a positive, strong willed and determined woman. One of my favorite quotes from her book “What I Know For Sure” is:
What I know for sure is that every day brings a chance for you to draw in a breath, kick off your shoes, and step out and dance – to live free of regret and filled with as much joy, fun, and laughter as you can stand. You can either waltz boldly onto the stage of life and live the way you know your spirit is nudging you to, or you can sit quietly by the wall, receding into the shadows of fear and self-doubt.

WHAT IS THE LAST GIFT YOU GAVE SOMEONE? // I got my flat mate’s some Marks And Spencer’s chocolate/snack treats, “just because” as a little surprise when they came home. Does that count? If not – I got my flat mate a mouse onesie for her birthday. She looks really cute dressed as a mouse.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST TREASURE POSSESSION? // Probably my drawer full of cards and pictures that I have received from friends and family since I have been in Dubai. Some from when I first made the move to Dubai, others on birthdays or when I have went through a difficult time. Most of the ones I have kept contain cute little memories and messages on them.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE CHILDREN? // Find whatever you are passionate about and go with it.

WHAT KEEPS YOU UP AT NIGHT? // Scrolling through instagram! And…Getting excited about the future. Right now I’m excited about Christmas!

YOUR WORST TRAIT? // Being indecisive – it drives me crazy.

THE WORST TRAIT IN OTHERS THAT GETS YOU MAD? // Being indecisive – because indecisive people together are just so stressful. I also dislike people who tell lies.

YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIES? // The Pursuit Of Happyness, The Great Gatsby, The Wolf Of Wall Street, The Intern and The Holiday.

WHO WOULD PLAY YOU IN A MOVIE? // Scarlett Johansson – I’m obsessed with her.

LAST RECORD / DOWNLOAD YOU BOUGHT? // I use Spotify. So..the last song I listened to is Slow Hands by Niall Horan. This song just makes me so happy.

FAVOURITE BOOK? // What I know For Sure – Oprah Winfrey.

LAST BOOK YOU BOUGHT? // Start Where You Are – Chris Gardner.

THE CLOSEST YOU HAVE COME TO DEATH? // I don’t think I’ve ever been that close to death. Maybe a really bad hangover has felt like it. My building went on fire and I ran down 73 sets of stairs to get out the building…I still don’t think I was close to death but my legs were killing for days afterwards.

FAVOURITE TRAVEL DESTINATION? // Los Angeles – I am in love with the place. I also love New York – but they are both completely different.

LEAST FAVOURITE TRAVEL DESTINATION? // China. It just doesn’t do it for me.

HOW DO YOU RELAX? // A glass of red wine while listening to Al Green.

URBAN OR RURAL? // Urban for now. Rural when I’m older.

CATS OR DOGS? // Dogs.

COFFEE OR TEA? // Tea….until Starbucks bring out the Toffee Nut (soya) latte at Christmas time!

WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH? // Practical Jokes, Prank calls, Kevin Bridges, Kevin Hart.

YOUR MOTTO / MESSAGE? // Try to find the positive in everything that happens.
