Beachroad Magazine meet up for a beach breakfast and chat with Hanne Ripsaluoma and Terhi Pinnington the founders of Omasi (Finnish word meaning "yours" or "your own") Omasi creates unique and fun products for beach-loving families. The designs are inspired by the sunshine, bright colors and beach life.
Where do you like to eat, shop and socialise in our community? // We both live and work in Umm Suqeim / Al Safa and just love the area. The closeness of the beach always has a good vibe and Jumeirah Beach Road is great with its small shops, cafes and restaurants. The area is perfect for an active family life and has a lovely atmosphere. You are never far from a cosy café, a park for the kids or the beach. We love The Hamptons café for breakfasts and we often hold Omasi’s internal weekly meetings there too.
For the best butter chicken in town at incredibly low price, we head to Ravi’s in Satwa. Amor Pizza & Gelato is a family favorite for lunch on the beach and nothing beats Coya for a dinner out with friends. We are also anxiously waiting for SurfHouse to start serving lunch in their new restaurant. They are also one of our favourite shopping destinations on the Beach Road and they are stocking Omasi products too! Another recently discovered fave is Garderobe, pre-love luxury items for a fraction of the original price.
What is your take on Dubai as a City and its rapid growth? // It’s difficult to think of another city that would be as buzzing and entrepreneurial as Dubai. It’s a real business hub and yet we can be on the beach every day. Dubai is very international and such an amazing mix of different cultures, languages and religions. We are proud to be part of the rapid growth of Dubai, it’s pretty unique.
The Dubai climate differs hugely from your homeland of Finland, how did you adjust to the shock? // As much as we love our home country, you can’t beat the year-round sunshine! Even after over 10 years it still feels amazing to be able to pre-arrange a bbq or beach picnic with friends and not need a plan B in case it’s raining!
What inspired you to start Omasi and any challenges along the way? // We felt a gap in the market for reasonably priced, quality beach items and that combined with both of us having a desire to be our own bosses and do something a bit creative led to us founding Omasi. There have been lots of challenges during these 2.5 years but we feel the biggest challenge is having the courage to get started and to actually go for it. Once you’re past that, everything else can be dealt with.
Any future plans that you can share with us? // We will be part of the Kite Beach’s Sea Side Market on Fridays starting in December for a month and hope to see you all there!
Omasi is also planning big 3rd birthday celebrations early next year…
