Beachroad Magazine meet Basil Azizoghly the creator of Howlin' Rooster custom made guitars.
Basil moved to Dubai in 1989 and has played the guitar since the age of 9, he runs Howlin' Rooster from his workshop in Sharjah, his custom guitars are made from up-cycled cigar boxes, jewellery boxes, oil tins, paint cans and his inspiration came on a trip to Nashville back in 2012.

NAME? // Basil Azizoghly.
YOUR FIRST JOB? // Manual work at my father’s factory when I was 12.
YOUR CURRENT OCCUPATION? // Operations manager at that same factory ☺ I have also been running Howlin Rooster guitars and such for almost 2 years.
YOUR GREATEST LOVE? // Music.
YOUR GREATEST FEAR? // Not having the freedom to do what I want.
WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST MEMORY? // Almost drowning in a pool when I was 4 years old after refusing to wear the floaters, and then yelling at my cousin when she saved me, because I didn’t want to be helped.
WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL AND WHY? // There are so many. It’s not specific people, but certain characteristics in a person that appeal to me. Independence, creativity, perseverance, and doing what you believe in no matter what the public opinion is.
WHAT WAS THE LAST GIFT YOU GAVE SOMEONE? // A bottle of whiskey, A bottle of Vodka, and a case of beer. That was yesterday. Before that was last week, I bought a few dresses for my wife and some souvenirs for the family from Bali. You choose which one you want to publish.
IF YOU WERE 80 YEARS OLD, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR CHILDREN? // Do not take yourself too seriously. You’re only human.
YOUR WORST TRAIT? // Losing my keys every single day.
THE WORST TRAIT IN OTHERS THAT GETS YOU MAD? // Dishonesty.
WHO WOULD PLAY YOUR ROLE IN A MOVIE? // Clint Eastwood. I like that guy.
FAVOURITE MUSIC? // Blues.
LAST RECORD YOU BOUGHT? // Bob Dylan Live 1966.
FAVOURITE BOOK? // The adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain.
LAST BOOK YOU BOUGHT? // The Jungle book by Rudyard Kipling.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU? // Learning something new and being able to share it with people.
THE CLOSEST YOU HAVE COME TO DEATH? // Riding through the jungle on the back of a motocross bike on a rainy night in Goa, India.
FAVOURITE DESTINATION? // SriLanka.
LEAST FAVOURITE DESTINATION? // The Dentist.
HOW DO YOU RELAX? // Listen to music, play an instrument, build something, run, sleep.
YOUR THOUGHTS AND EXPERIENCES IN DUBAI? // I grew up here, and left for 8 years when I was in University. Now I’ve been back for two years so I experienced Dubai both as a child, and now as an adult, and those are both very different perspectives. Dubai is a young place, a lot of potential and lots of communities are coming up these days, turning it into a more “real” environment. I feel comfortable here, and there is a lot of opportunity for someone with a good idea. That being said, I prefer a simpler place, smaller place, but that’s just me.
